Sri Lanka, from ancient times had a tradition of considering learning as a valued treasure and there was a developed system of education with great seats of learning equivalent to present day universities. Although with foreign invasions there was a decline and breakdown of the ancient education system the resurgence of modern school system since the last century is a testimony to the underlying influence of these ancient traditions in our society.
Education has been a priority in Sri Lanka from the ancient times. Sri Lanka is in forefront in the literacy rate among the third world countries.

Sri Lanka records a proud history of providing a holistic education to it’s offspring in moulding conscientious patriotic citizens from the system of Pirivena Education from its monastic colleges. The core of the principles of education centered round the teaching of the Buddha and the monks and the ‘gurus’ of the ancient system were inspired by the Buddha and the Buddhism was advocated as a major requirement of the education system.
